Granite sind magmatische Gesteine die sich aus Gesteinsschmelzen (Magma) bilden. Das typische körnige Granitgefüge entsteht nur wenn sich diese Schmelzen langsam abkühlen. Das ist erst ab einer gewissen Tiefe in der Erdkruste der Fall. Jeder Granit besteht aus zwei Feldspäten, Alkalifeldspat und Plagioklas sowie Quarz. Der Alkalifeldspat ist in den Graniten kräftiger gefärbt (rot, grün, gelb) als der Plagioklas (weiss). Neben Feldspat und Quarz enthalten Granite fast immer zusätzlich dunkle Minerale. Meist handelt es sich um Biotit (Glimmer). Die allermeisten Granite sind helle Gesteine. Neben gelblichen, rötlichen und grünen kommen auch weisse und mehrfarbig bunte Varianten vor. Granite können auch bei gleicher chemischer Zusammensetzung sehr unterschiedlich aussehen. Es ist hauptsächlich die Korngrösse der Minerale und deren Färbung, die für die vielen unterschiedlichen Varianten verantwortlich sind.
