Das Gebiet um Grindelwald birgt eine Vielzahl an farbenfrohen, lokaltypischen Gesteinen, von denen der Grindelwaldner Marmor internationale Berühmtheit erlangte. Der attraktive bunte Stein fand im In- und Ausland mannigfaltige Verwendung im Bau- und Kunstgewerbe. Weniger bekannt, aber nicht minder attraktiv, ist der Rosenlaui Marmor. Er entspricht weitgehend demjenigen von Grindelwald. Die weissen, hellgrauen, gelblichen und fleischfarbenen Partien sind die eigentlichen marmorartigen Kalkanteile. Die dunkelgrünen Komponenten stellen ein unterschiedlich zusammengesetztes Gemisch aus Quarzkörnern dar, eingebettet in eine feine Grundmasse aus Tonmineralien, Chlorit, Glimmer und Kalzit. Purpurrote bis violette Partikel sind ähnlich zusammengesetzt wie die grünen Partien. Farbgebende Komponente in der Grundmasse ist hier aber das Eisenoxyd Hämatit.
