 Solothurner Kalkstein entstand vor ca. 150 Mio Jahren aus kalkigen Ablagerungen in flachen Gewässern des Jurameeres.

 

Er ist ein kompakter, feinkörniger, fossilreicher Kalkstein und wurde seit der Römerzeit bis Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts zu Bauzwecken abgebaut. Viele Gebäude der Solothurner Altstadt sind aus diesem lokalen Gestein gebaut.
