Wie der Name vermuten lässt, wird der Kalifornit vor allem in Kalifornien gefunden. In der Schweiz ist Vesuvian vom Piz Lunghin bekannt – meist in inniger Verwachsung mit Diopsid. Mit ein wenig Glück kann man aber auch sehr schöne transparente Kalifornite finden. Der Vesuvian (Diopsidfels) vom Piz Lunghin weist verschiedene Farbtöne auf. Diese sind vom Mischungsverhältnis des weissgrauen Pyroxens mit dem grünen Vesuvian abhängig. Die Vesuviane vom Piz Lunghin haben einige Eigenschaften wie Farbe, Härte, Dichte, die sehr ähnlich den Jadearten Jadeit und Nephrit sind. Gemeinsam ist diesen Funden, dass sie alle im Kontakt zum Serpentinit vorkommen.
