Der Name Rhodonit ist vom griechischen Wort Rhodos = Rose abgeleitet. Die Geschichte des Schmucksteines Rhodonit begann im Ural des zaristischen Russland. Dort erlangte das Rohmaterial in der russischen Schmucksteinkunst rasch eine bevorzugte Stellung. Die rote Farbe verdankt der Stein seinem Mangangehalt. Rhodonit findet man nicht nur in Russland, sondern auch in den USA, in Kanada, in Australien und gleich an mehreren Orten in Graubünden. Immer wieder überrascht der unscheinbare schwarze Rohstein beim Aufschlagen, dann nämlich, wenn das Rosarot eines wahren Edelsteins hervortritt.
