Eklogite sind Gesteine, welche unter eklogitfaziellen Druck- und Temperaturbedingungen metamorph entstanden sind. Eklogite mit basaltischem Chemismus bestehen aus grünem Klinopyroxen (omphazitreich) und rotem Granat (pyropreich). Eklogite entstehen bei hohen Druckverhältnissen und mittleren bis hohen Temperaturen. Eklogit ist das dichteste aller Silikatgesteine, das an der Erdoberfläche aufgeschlossen ist.
Die ältesten bisher gefundenen Eklogite stammen aus dem Usagaran-Gebirge in Tansania und haben ein Alter von zwei Milliarden Jahren. Die jüngsten Eklogite sind erst kürzlich im Himalaya entdeckt worden und haben ein Alter von nur 49 Millionen Jahren.
