Seit uralten Zeiten wurden im Tirol Kupfererze abgebaut und verarbeitet. Das anstehende Kupfererz ist ein sogenanntes Fahlerz (Komplexerz) in dem Kupfer, Schiefer, Antimon, Arsen, Quecksilber, Eisen, Zink und Silber die Hauptbestandteile bilden. Die aus dem Erz entstehenden weiteren Sekundärmineralien sind hauptsächlich schwarzer Dolomit (Nordtiroler Grauwackenzone), Kalzit, Olivenit, Azurit, Malachit, Tirolit (radialstrahlige grüne Sonnen), Theisit, Tenorit und Chrisokoll. Bis heute wird dieses vielseitige, farbenreiche Gestein in der Schmuckbranche kaum verarbeitet.
