Quarzite sind fein bis mittelkörnige metamorphe Gesteine, die mindestens aus 80 % Quarz bestehen. Quarzit enthält im Wesentlichen miteinander verbundene rekristallisierte Quarzkörner. Die Farbe ist meist weissgrau. Als Nebengemengteile können Feldspat, Muskovit, Chlorit, Magnetit, Granat, Graphit, grünlicher Phengit (Hellglimmer) und Hornblende auftreten. Durch eine Kombination von Druck, Temperatur und mechanischer Belastung werden die einzelnen Quarzkörner dabei durch Drucklösung deformiert und ihr Kristallgitter beginnt sich neu zu ordnen. Dabei entsteht durch eine ausgerichtete Druckrichtung das lagige Gefüge, das sich gut aufspalten lässt. Insbesondere als Naturstein finden viele Quarzite Verwendung. Im Handel existieren zahlreiche Varietäten, die unter eigenem Namen gehandelt werden.
