Die Magnesit Lagerstätte Sunk / Hohentauern in der Steiermark (Oesterreich) ist weltweit bekannt für seinen gesteinsbildenden Magnesit. Grau-weisser Magnesit mit einem grobkristallinen Wachstumsgefüge mit Eisblumentextur, die in ihrer Form Pinienkernen oder Eisblumen ähnelt, wird als Pinolit oder Eisblumenmagnesit bezeichnet. Grosse, helle Magnesitkristalle sind in einer grauen, feinkörnigen Matrix eingebettet. Diese spezielle Ausbildung der Magnesitkristalle entstand dadurch, dass beim Kristallwachstum Graphit und tonige Verunreinigungen verdrängt wurden und ein dunkles Integranularnetz zwischen den oft zentimetergrossen, hellen Magnesitkristallen formten. Grosse Pinolitkristalle können graphitische Bestandteile, Quarzkörner, Kiesfilter und Reste von Dolomit umwachsen.
