Disthen ist aus den griechischen Wörtern dis und sthenos gebildet, was soviel wie zweifache Kraft bedeutet. Häufig tritt der auch Kyanit genannte (griech. kyanos = blau) in wirrstrahligen, blau gefärbten Aggregaten auf. Bei Vorkommen, in denen Kyanit und Staurolith gemeinsam auftreten, ist gelegentlich eine orientierte Parallelverwachsung dieser beiden Mineralien zu beobachten. Der Kyanit ist ein charakteristisches Mineral der kristallinen Paragonit-Schiefer. Er wird gebildet, wenn hohe Drucke eine Metamorphose von tonerdereichen Gesteinen bewirken, bei Temperaturen von mehr als 1500°C. Meistens befindet er sich in Gesellschaft von Glimmer, Granat, Hornblende und Staurolith. Das Fundgebiet bildet ein grosses Dreieck, das von den Eckpunkten Pizzo Forno – Pizzo Campo Tencia – Alpe Sponda im Tessin gebildet wird. Gute Schleifstücke aus diesem Gebiet mit blauem Kyanit, rot bis braunschwarzem Staurolith auf weissem Glimmer sind wahre Prachtstücke.
