Gneise sind metamorphe Gesteine, bei denen eine deutliche Schichtung durch grobe, helle und dunkle Lagen definiert ist. Gneise aus dem Tessin werden von Laien noch heute oft „Granite“ genannt. Die klare Richtungsorientierung der Gneise aufgrund der im Gestein ausgerichteten Mineralien unterscheiden diese jedoch ganz klar von den homogenen Graniten (gleichmässige Orientierung in alle Richtungen).

Schwieriger jedoch ist die Unterscheidung von Ortho- bzw. Paragneisen. Bei Orthogneisen sind helle, spezifisch leichtere Magmatite (hauptsächlich Granite) das Ausgangsgestein – im Gegensatz zu Paragneisen, welche aus Sedimenten hervorgingen.
