Vor etwa 30 Millionen Jahren drangen in die damals schon bestehenden penninischen und ostalpinen Decken granitische Schmelzen ein. Eine solche Intrusion ist das Bergeller Massiv, das erst durch spätere Erosion freigelegt wurde. Seine Hauptmasse ist ein grobkörniger porphyrischer Granit, an dessen Nordrand die Kontaktmetamorphose in den mesozoischen Sedimentgesteinen gut sichtbar ist. Diese wurde in Marmor und Kalksilikatfels mit Granat und Diopsid umgewandelt. So ist diese farblich wunderschöne Verschmelzung wissenschaftlich zu erklären.
