Geologen nennen den Stein Roffnagneis oder auch Andeerer Porphyrgneis. Im Handel ist er jedoch unter dem Namen Andeerer Granit bekannt. Der Roffnagneis war tatsächlich einmal ein Granit. Aber der einst massige Granit wurde später wie alle Steine im Schamsertal bei der Alpenbildung gepresst und umgeformt. Er wurde geschichtet, so dass er heute als alpin schwach metamorpher Gneis zu bezeichnen ist. Das Gestein weist eine deutlich gestreckte, lagige bis faserige Textur auf. Es ist sehr fest und kompakt, demnach auch wetter und frostbeständig. Es enthält 40–45% Quarz, 20–30% Feldspat und 30–35% Glimmer. Diese drei gesteinsbildenden Mineralarten: Feldspat, Quarz und Glimmer finden wir immer in der grossen Gesteinsgruppe der Granite. Die Farbe vom Andeerer Gneis stammt vom Mineral Fengit ab. Heute ist der Andeerer Granit dank seinem einmalig grünlichen Farbton ein sehr gefragter Stein im Bausektor.
