Der Laaser Marmor ist ein echter Marmor in wissenschaftlichem Sinne. Er ist ein chemisch fast reiner hochkristalliner durchgebildeter Kalkstein von zuckerkörniger Struktur, dessen einzelne Kristalle vorzüglich ineinander verzahnt sind. Der Laaser Marmor ist rissarm, hart und druckfest, dabei aber lichtdurchlässig und einwandfrei polierbar. Durch graphitische Beimengungen ergeben sich da und dort Schlieren oder lagenweise Trübungen. Die beste Qualität wird auf über 1600 Meter über Meer an der Spitze der Jennwand gewonnen. Die Dicke der Marmorader beträgt teilweise über 100 Meter.
