Der schwarze Mergelschiefer aus dem Gebiet zwischen Rosenlaui/Grosse Scheidegg und der Lenk kommt oft in Kugelform bis zu einer Grösse von zirka 15 cm vor. Aufgrund des tiefschwarzen, tonmineralienhaltigen Mergelschiefers hat die Lütschine in Grindelwald den Namen Schwarze Lütschine bekommen. Das Gestein weist einen grossen Anteil an Quarz auf, häufig mit schönen, weissen Quarzadern. Es enthält neben Eisen, Tonmineralien, Chamosit und Chlorit auch Pyrit. In etwa der Hälfte des Vorkommens sind Pyritnester im Zentrum eingelagert. Charakteristisch für Pyrit sind der metallische Glanz und die messinggelbe Farbe. Die häufigste kristalline Form des Pyrits ist der Würfel.
