Marmor ist das Resultat von geologischen Umschichtungen und Umwälzungen, die über Jahrmillionen vor sich gegangen sind. Kalkmassen, die sich in der Triaszeit (vor 200 Millionen Jahren) angesammelt hatten, wurden bei der Bildung der Alpen zusammengepresst und durch enormen Druck erhitzt. Durch die Metamorphose entstand ein hartes, kristallines Gestein von ausserordentlicher Schönheit. Der Marmor von Peccia – in einem kleinen Nebental des Valle Maggia gelegen – ist daher ein echter Marmor, wie derjenige von Carrara oder von Griechenland. Die chemische Zusammensetzung des reinen Kalzit-Marmors von Peccia entspricht sogar völlig derjenigen der schönsten Marmorgesteine von Griechenland (Paros). Die Reflexion des Lichtes an den Spaltflächen der bis zu 2 mm grossen Körner (Kalzitkristalle) verleihen dem Peccia Marmor sein glitzerndes Aussehen und seinen einmaligen Glanz. Seine Farbenvielfalt reicht von weiss bis grau, mit grüner, bläulicher oder zartrosa Bänderung.
